Musharraf, Altaf and others again served notices
The Sindh High Court on Friday again served
notices on former President Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf, MQM chief Altaf Hussain
and other the then government officials for June 1, in a petition seeking probe
into the May 12, 2007 mayhem in the city.
The Sindh High Court again summoned the respondents on the petition filed by
Human Rights Commission of South Asia (HRCSA) Pakistan representative Iqbal
Kazmi seeking investigation into the May 12, 2007 carnage in the metropolis at
the arrival of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, who was
deposed at that time.
The court also issued directive to the District and Sessions Court Islamabad to
ensure dispatching the notice to Pervez Musharraf’s current residential address.
The petitioner submitted that over 50 people were killed when the miscreants
sprayed bullets on participants of rallies of the lawyers taken out to welcome
the arrival of the CJP and more than 100 people also sustained bullet injuries.
He said that his relatives were also among the victims.
He submitted that he was forced to withdraw the petition under threat and
pressure. The petitioner cited the then president, federal government, MQM Chief
Altaf Hussain, the then Sindh chief minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim, the then
advisor to the Sindh chief minister Waseem Akhtar, DG Rangers, the then Sindh
home secretary Ghulam Muhammad Mohtaram; Sindh IGP Niaz Ahmed Siddiqui, the then
Capital City Police Officer Azhar Farooqi, IOs of 23 police stations and others
as respondents in the petition.
Meanwhile, a division bench of the SHC, comprising Justice Mushir Alam and
Justice Tufail H Ibrahim summoned the Federal Interior Secretary, the Sindh home
secretary, the Sindh IGP, DG Rangers (Sindh) and others to appear before the
court and submit all FIRs and reports regarding target-killings in Karachi
within two weeks.
Arguing before the court, the petitioner HRCSA Pakistan representative Iqbal
Kazmi requested to issue directive to empower the Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) to
conduct operation in the entire Karachi to clean the city from weapons and also
take action against the culprits involved in the target-killing.
