SHC demands report on Karachi target killings.
KARACHI - The Sindh High Court on Friday directed the Sindh government and others to submit their reports about the target killings in the City within four weeks in a petition filed by the Human Rights Commission for South Asia, through its representative for Pakistan Syed Iqbal Kazmi. The petitioner informed the division bench, comprised of Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Irfan Saadar Khan that despite serving notices on the respondents twice, they had not so far submitted their counter affidavit. Taking exception to the point, the court asked Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Khan and Assistance Attorney Adnan Karim who then told the court that the respondents needed further time. Granting their request, the court directed them to submit the reports in the next hearing. Syed Mohammad Iqbal Kazmi, a representative of the Human Rights Commission South Asia (HRCSA) has filed the petition whereby he has held the government and law enforcement agencies responsible for the target killings in the City. He maintained that as many as 445 people were killed from January 2009 to June 2009 in different parts of the City, out of which 54 belonged to Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM).He contended that only one political party Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM) has been restrained political activities in Karachi while the City has been declared as “No Go Area” for its activists on the wish of a particular. The bench expressed displeasure and issued strict instructions to the respondents to submit all relevant details and written replies regarding the number of incidents of target killing in the precincts of their respective police stations.
